The silver GTB that went to Japan.
Registered in Frosinone in 1976 and bought at auction in Monaco in 1999 by Marlon van der Meer, now one of the people behind Maranello Data. Thirteen Dutch years brought a film role and a rally beside a prince. Then a container took it to Japan, where its plate reads 19-76.

The first 308 GTBs had glass-fibre bodies, built by Scaglietti; in Italian, Vetroresina. A British newspaper clipping of the time says Niki Lauda, then Ferrari’s world champion, did much of the development work. “In my opinion it’s the best Ferrari ever made,” he says. “And that’s not just because I’m employed there!”8

A newspaper report from Den Helder follows the two-day Waterloo rally, started as a joke by friends from Rotterdam’s Erasmus University. Marlon van der Meer, who grew up in Den Helder, drives the silver Ferrari off the car park at Fort Kijkduin just ahead of Prince Johan Friso in a Porsche 911. He tells the reporter the car is “entirely plastic”, one of only two in the Netherlands, and that he crumpled its floor pan on a railway crossing. “But I don’t spare it. It has to be driven.”4
